One of the UK’s freshest new drum & bass talents drops his debut solo single on Critical, this one is simple mammoth! Emperor has been making waves over the past couple of years moonlighting with various camps but it was the keen ear of label boss Kasra that cottoned on early drawing him deep into the Critical ranks. If this new single is anything to go by, one of the best decisions Critical could have made.
The cinematic intro of ‘Begin’ is beautiful blend of strings, reversed fx and the sultry vocals of Georgia Yates who featured on the Enei album last year. All build to a haunting dropout before the next stage, an absolute nasty tech-stepping future roll-out that’s been getting Fabric in sweat these last few months. Twisted, uplifting and wonderfully emotive, this is another slice of Critical magic.
Next up and we’re treated to the vintage double-bass grooves of ‘She Said’. Another huge epic intro featuring a soaring vocal drifting over ethereal pads features here as hi-end percussion leads into the fattest bassline for a properly funked up dance floor workout. Think Roni Size ‘Brown Paper Bag’ or Peshay’s ‘Miles From Home’ for 2013…bad to the bone!

Jungle Juke? Astrophonica conclude their three-part, experimental VIP series by inviting Machinedrum to give his own take on the label’s search for a new sound.

Clissold VIP sees the now Berlin-based, globe-trotting producer add his unique touch to Fracture & Neptune’s original by taking the track into frenetic yet hazy vibes. As with the two previous VIPs, this release pushes at the seams of established genres to deliver a musical experience that’s truly boundary breaking.

Machinedrum’s own experiments with tempos and genres in recent years have put him at the forefront of a small group of producers who are pushing things forward, alongside the likes of Om Unit who featured on the second VIP.

As with the previous two releases, Machinedrum’s Clissold VIP will be available as a limited edition of 300 x 10” one-sided vinyl with 2 colour screen printed and hand numbered sleeves.

Clissold VIP was exclusively aired on Gilles Peterson’s BBC 6 Music show and has since had support from Om Unit, dBridge and Daedelus.

Emerging last year as Austria’s latest drum & bass talent to take the world by storm, Martin Mefjus as been on a serious roll with his music featuring heavily in the sets of the scenes biggest players. Never ones to rest on their laurels Critical were listening and snapped him up all for themselves as the latest to join the Critical roster alongside Enei, Foreign Concept, Xtrah and Emperor. Now as he readies his debut solo release on the label, Mefjus looks set to take things up a gear.

‘Signalz’ has been damaging dance floors at Critical events across the land these past few months and now it’s time to get up close and personal with this utterly disgusting beast of a tune and see what the fuss is about. The build up is all epic pads and smattering percussion but it’s the main event with its colossal bass drone and frenetic drums that’s gonna grab you and never let go until the next tune drops in. Watch for the sick edits and switches to keep you on your toes. Truly big, stinking and nasty!
Next up label boss Kasra joins forces with the young Austrian on another absolute belting slice of technoid drum & bass that’s been getting Critical’s Fabric sessions in all sorts of bother of late. ‘Cypher’ is pure future with the synth stabs to match and bassline to smash, showing some strong sturdy roots for possibly a few more collaborations from these two. Wasting no we return straight off the back of the epic year opener; the “In from the Wild” LP from long standing scene heavyweights Survival and Silent Witness… DIS064 follows that album straight up with 3 stone cold slabs of driving tech tinged Dance floor devastation.

Lead track “Pinch Me” is brought to you courtesy of one third of this years most hotly tipped production powerhouse ‘Ivy Lab’ with Lab member Sabre joining forces with the hugely talented Cern for an outing that is already leaving a trail of destruction on all of the most important dance floors, being played by every DJ in the scene including exclusive upfront support by DJ Friction’s on his BBC Radio 1 show.

In perfect compliment the A side of this release is backed up incredibly by two solo outings from Cern himself following up the heat in equal measure with “Hollow Moon” and last but not least to cap off this release we have a digital bonus digital exclusive “Confession”.
